I dont want to grow wise!!!

I dont want to grow wise !!

If I have to grow wisdom teeth to accomplish that ....

Two tiny little wisdom teeth beginning to grow at the far corners of my mouth ... So bloody damn painful. Whoever said gaining wisdom was a pleasant experience ??
p.s: For all people suffering from wisdom teeth pain, or any toothache, try chewing on a piece of clove, making sure you are chewing it right near the pain area. It is the safest possible remedy. Highly recommended by mom, and certified by me.

Long live the judiciary!!!

TNPCEE Survives!!!

From The Hindu:

TN Govt order on CET quashed

Chennai, June 27. (PTI): The Madras High Court today quashed Tamil Nadu Government's recent order abolishing Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to professional courses in the state.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Markandeya Khatju and Justice S M Ibrahim Kalifullah, however, said that regarding the improvement examination, the matter is a policy decision of the Government and the court would not interfere as it was a benefit given to the students.

The court said the improvement examinations would be valid for this year.

On June 9, a state government notification had abolished Common Entrance Test and improvement examination with immediate effect.

The Indian IT Bubble??

Just heard some 2005 placement stats from my engineering alma mater, PSG Tech ...

(Disclaimer: All information is from unofficial sources. And the author of this blog doesnt hold any candles to the reliability of this data .. Anybody believing this data does so at his own risk .. Blah blah blah...)

But that apart, these are good enough to be believed.

Supposedly only 3 companies have been on campus till now. And the numbers recruited has been like ..

TCS - 320 recruits
CTS - 194
Infy - 48

And Infy supposedly recruited low only because most people on campus already had been taken. Im still reeling from the weight of these numbers ... Sounds real crazy, doesnt it. People tell me CTS recruited 520 or something from Anna University.

All ye people in Indian IT, what d u think?

Is this a bubble? Or is Indian IT really facing a sustainable boom (Sustainable boom!!! hehehehe) ???

The worst thing about...

The worst thing about...

...being abroad is the loneliness that eventually engulfs you. After all, there is no substitute for home. You may get great food. There might be awesome entertainment avenues. The infrastructure might be infinitely better. There may be some really great Desi channels on your television set. You may have a decent circle of friends with whom you are extremely comfortable. But after the first one month, invariably, I start getting this feeling of loneliness. I had this when I was in the US for a few months. The same again happened to some extent when I was in Denmark. Now, surprisingly, in the hugely Indian dominated Oman too, I have the same feeling creeping up.

What is it about India that I often search for wherever I go?

- The crowds.
- The roads.
- The freedom to cross the roads whenever and wherever you want to.
- The overflowing garbage bins that line the roads.
- The unruly traffic.
- The power cuts.
- Watching 5 Tamil channels on TV at any point of the day.
- The knowledge that mom and dad are just around the corner.
- The freedom to talk to my sister for an hour without bothering about spending away a fortune.
- A bunch of friends who understand and empathize with what exactly you are going through, and are probably going through it themselves.
- One of the lowest costs of living on earth.
- The loud music that blares all over the place.
- That incredible thing called home made food.
- The beauty of unplanned, unstructured locales.
- The monsoon.
- The pollution that makes you cough every time you are stuck in the traffic.
- The bargaining that is so essentially a part of Indian life.
- Traveling one hour to reach anywhere from anywhere.
- The otherwise usually atrocious autowallahs.
-The awesome pace of life

But is this what I really miss about India? I don’t know. There seem to be so many implicit factors. And so many indefinable emotions. Is it patriotism? Probably not something so noble. By the way, what is it that makes India so unique to you? I’m sure you would have a different list altogether...

This incredible “Swades” feeling that continues to bother me, is it a universal syndrome? Or, is it just me imagining things?

The worst thing about…

The worst thing about…

…trying to be on a diet is this incredible level of guilt that you suffer from whenever you eat anything worthwhile.

Off late, I have been trying to lose some of those pounds and pounds of fat which were the “most visible value additions” I had during my IIM-B stint. Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t do crash diets. No sir, not for me. I still have my doses of pizzas and chicken. I haven’t even reduced my daily quantum of intake.

My diet often comprises of substituting a cheese lined vegetable salad in place of a double melt, stuffed crust, obscenely cheese filled chicken pizza in my daily menu (seriously… in the place that I work in right now, the only food options I have are a Pizza Hut salad or a Pizza Hut pizza). And I may often accompany this immense sacrifice with an hour or so of “exercise”, in roughly about once a month.

As an informed observer may point out, these efforts of mine are not really directed at losing weight. I guess a psychiatrist may classify these as a feeble attempt to assuage the immense level of guilt that goes with being a “newbie heavyweight”.

Now what really triggered this post was not a general feeling of depression about the 5-7 kgs of excess fat deposited around my mid-riff. It was a more specific incident that happened yesterday. An incident that continues to torture me, almost 13-14 hours after it got over. The incident in question? Yesterday night’s dinner.

I had been to this very highly recommended ‘chickenery’ yesterday... you know, one of these KFC like places, specializing in Chicken and chicken only… my friend who had been there some days back, had gone absolutely gaga over the food there. So, I went about discovering this place… And ordered stuff, which I thought was at a reasonable level, for a “moderate eater” like me.

And then I unfortunately discovered that they deliver food in portions that are meant more for all those Japanese Sumo warriors rather than for normal human beings… But with the food being so delicious there was hardly anything I could do about it… Eventually ended up consuming the entire stuff… Had this slight feeling creeping up me that I was putting the entire chicken species in the endangered list…

But well, that is of no consequence. So, after a really hearty meal, I was feeling so bad about myself that I had to do something to assuage it. So, to make myself feel better, I ended up ordering a triple scoop of this amazing date flavored ice-cream that the place serves. So much for a “diet”.

And now, the day after, I’m still tossing around in guilt. And that my dear readers, is the worst thing about trying to lose weight.

The new Google template of the blog is courtesy of John .. http://blogger-templates.blogspot.com/
Thanks John ..

People pls do pass on any comments you may have on the new template .. I think it's just cool .. But that could be because I have been an eternal Google fan.

TNPCEE !! Oh my dear TNPCEE !!

Yesterday, the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Ms. J Jayalalitha, announced that the TNPCEE has been abolished. For the uninitiated, the TNPCEE is the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination, the entrance examination for entry into all professional courses in Tamil Nadu. In one stroke, a major institution has been nullified. A budding industry dependent on the TNPCEE has been crushed. But that doesn’t really bother me. What is bothering me really is the magnitude of change that would be brought about this move.

Unlike many of my contemporaries, I have never been an Amma hater. Actually, I have been appreciative of some of her bold decisions. While it is a totally different story that she reversed almost every one of the decisions that I had appreciated, the fact still remained that she had a political will that I haven’t been able to spot all that frequently in the Indian political scene. Well, she did have her share of mistakes, and some huge ones at that. But well, in the political scenario that I see around, I don’t think that she really was worse than any of her political rivals. All said and done, she was Okay, I would say. But then, all that stopped today.

You know, there should be areas that shouldn’t be touched by politicians. Areas that shouldn’t be meddled around by the inexperienced. Entrance exams are one such area. I’m sure there were noble intentions behind that lady’s sudden move, but was it a carefully thought out decision? I’m not all that sure.

To begin with let’s see what the obvious implications of this move are for the student population of Tamil Nadu:

1. There is likely to be a greater rural presence in several of the engineering colleges, which I assume is the prime reason behind the Chief Minister’s sudden move. As the official reason states, most rural areas don’t have the presence of an IIPE or some such entrance exam coaching centre. The entrance exam industry has chosen to leave the rural areas quite untapped. And this I guess did create a disadvantage for students hailing from poor, rural backgrounds.

2. The entrance exam “industry” in Tamil Nadu, took a big blow today. That does make me a bit happy. The buggers were charging such exorbitant rates.

Now, there are a lot of not so obvious effects of this move. There are a few that did come up to my mind when I first saw the news ..

1. It doesn’t really matter whether you understand what you study, as long as you can mug it. As everyone who has gone through the process knows, the XII exams are a sham. All that you need to do is mug. You have one year to mug up three text books, end to end, word by word. And that is all you need to do. In the days of the golden old TNPCEE, the entrance exam was the only way you got to really use your brains in the XII standard. At a broad level, it is worth debating whether the current XII exams add any value at all to the students.

2. Comparisons are inevitable to the BITS Pilani way of admission. Now, I’m not a supporter of that either. But in BITS, you are at least expected to score decently in all your subjects. In the new TN model, all you have to do is crack 3 subjects, and manage to pass in the rest.

3. If you are a CBSE/ISC student, sorry sir. You are f**ked. As simple as that. That is, unless you manage to pull of a 99% in your Maths and Science 12th exams. Fat chance of that. The probabilities are gonna work against u. I guess the state board produces at least a couple of thousands of 100% scorers in each of Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Now what would be the comparable number for the CBSE?

4. Now I wouldn’t go on and explain this in detail, but I would expect the gender ratio in the top engineering colleges to improve significantly. Now, that isn’t really all that bad, is it? Hehe.. I’m sure at least one section of loyal readers are fuming with anger now ..:-) Just joking, people ..

5. The logistics still confuse me. If the current system continues, the number of people scoring the same cut off would be obscenely high. In that scenario, how would seat allocation work?? For example, if 300 people (it could be 3000, for all you know), end up with a cut off 180 out of 200, how would seat allocation work? If lets say 100 of them are after the same course in a college that has only 50 of these seats, would allocation be done in alphabetical order of the candidate name ( With names like Viswanathan, it could be tough luck on that front for some people!!)? If not alphabetical, would there be a lucky draw?? Let’s see how Anna University manages to resolve that.

6. The Chief Minister claimed that the entrance exams play too significant a role in determining the student’s life. Now that role would be taken up by Lady Luck. As I have realized over the years, in a lot of these theory exams, luck, your handwriting, and the mood of the examiner correcting your papers end up playing a huge role. May Lady Luck be with all of you writing your exams this year … But by Law of Averages, some of you would most definitely be screwed irreparably.

Now Ms. Chief Minister, while you may have had some noble intentions behind this unfortunate move of yours, there might still be a way out .. So, a humble request ..

REFORM THE CLASS XII EXAMINATION SYSTEM !!!!

Ms. Chief Minister, it would be so great if you could order a revamp of the XII examination system. Just a bit at least. So that it isn’t the great shame that it is today. Make them a bit objective. Try to encourage the students to think a bit .. to apply thought a bit .. to go beyond those darn textbooks …

But alas!! I know my words are going into invisible deaf ears .. So much for two pages of effort .. All the best all you XII kids .. May the force be with you .. The years to come are gonna be rough 

p.s: I personally belonged to the category who could somehow never manage to crack these bloody mindless rote theory exams of Std XII .. And pretty much survived coz of my engineering scores… Probably explains why I’m so passionate about the subject.
