My first international publication !!!

After a long wait, the guys at ESADE (Barcelona, Spain) have finally published the 2004 Annual ESADE MBA review. Yup, the same journal where I and Gowri Shankar cracked the international second prize .. Reading the entries, I cant help wondering that we might just as well have got the first prize :-(

Neways, it was delightful to see the other competitors in the fray .. The other participating schools included Wharton, Kellogg, Bocconi, Stern, University of Texas, WHU (Germany), IIM-A, Babson College, NUS, USC, Nanyang and several other top notch universities .. Supposedly more than 400 students participated ..

Neways, here's a short writeup on the event ..

A Writeup on the ESADE MBA Review

And for those of you really interested in reading my paper, and have the bandwidth to download a 2 MB file, you can download the entire journal online from this link...

Happy Reading .. Hehe. Ciao.

What else .. General Timepass

Sometimes life does seem a bit dull .. IIM-B has ended up making a lot of us quite a bit masochistic .. We seem to enjoy pressure .. Not a good sign, eh?? The lack of pressure seems more horrible than all the nights-out and tight deadlines of Term IV. Don't take me wrong .. I still have atleast one night out per week, but things arent really what they used to be..
I have a rather mixed course profile this time .. Multinational Management, Current Economic Scenario, Supply Chain Management, & Sales and Distribution .. After one full term of finance and finance only, Im back to more practical subjects .. At the end of my MBA, when I reflect back, I realize that I have not really specialized in any one area in particular .. While the maximum number of courses I have taken in any one area is still Finance, the other areas arent far behind.
Company presentations have started. IT seems to be making a big comeback on campus this time...But it is still too early to say anything definitely .. The consulting and I-Bank hopefuls have started mugging their way through books, cases and the rest of the associated paraphernalia. Junta are working and reworking their way through their resumes .. And the laterals process has started in a rather modest way.
A lot of people who have returned from Europe and the US after their exchange proagrams still wonder at the fact that most companies abroad dont take the CGPA as a factor of consideration into their recruitment procedure for MBAs. Im not sure if at all such a scenario would arise in Indian universities. Highly unlikely. I guess the Indian obsession with the CGPA can be traced to the general Indian obsession with numbers .. Well, what's the point talking about obviously pointless stuff. But, well the issue remains. The debate of whether the CGPA is a true indicator of ablity will continue forever. The fact is that CGPA is indeed a nice shortcut to judging a resume. And well, my rather biased opinion is that, the only advantage of this short cut is that it is short.
Nothing much to write about for now .. bye for now, my dear readers !!

Post hibernation ..

After more than a month of hibernation, time for some activities on this blog.. First things first, my last blogpost was from Texas ..Now Im back home .. Back to life at IIM-Bangalore. Life in term VI rocks.

The trip back home from the US was as eventless as a 3 day trip can possibly be. The only significant event being the one day stop over at Bangkok. Went around as much of Bangkok as is possible in a 8 hour time window. Had some "interesting" company on the flight from LA to Bangkok. My neighbour on the flight was Tanya, a rather young and interesting personality. God's answer to my long time query of why I alone seemed to get all kinds of dumb old buggers as my neighbours in all my flights. Tanya is an artist. A beautiful one at that, fortunately .. Went thru her art, all of which seemed rather peculiarly interesting .. Not that I can appreciate art forms .. But still. This is Tanya's website .. if you happen to be interested in masks and strange arts ...

Bangkok is like Indian cities .. but for the decent roads .. I hired a car for the day .. a 5 hour trip around the city cost just about 500 Baht .. A rather good deal. Went to a couple of temples, museums, and shopping centres. Seeing my rather expensive camera, and the fact that I was returning from the USA, my tourist guide assumed I must be some deep pocket party. The ensuing comedy was hilarious. My guide took me to all sorts of jewellery centers and jade shops. I too went along with the flow, trying to play the role of the rich American tourist from the US.
The event of the day was at a Jade Museum, where, on seeing a Rs. 2,40,000 Jade Buddha, I asked the curator rather seriously "If I place the order now, when would you be able to deliver this piece to me in Texas?". Remember I was playing out the story that I would be returning to the US after a short vacation in India. After some penetrating questions about the Jade Buddha's sculptural technique, quality of Jade used and stuff liek that, I went on to more serious issues like "I would rather refer it if you send it to me by DHL or Fedex" .. The tone of this conversation must have been real convincing, for the guys trated me with increasing respect with every passing moment .. Then finally when even I thought it was a bit too much, I had to quit my game with a rather innocuous "I will return with my Thai friend in the evening to confirm other details" ... Some nice fun that was ..
Being back in IIM-B campus is an exhilarating feeling .. Back amidst friends .. Back to speaking Tam after a long time .. And Term VI is definitely chill .. The entire batch is in a lazy mood.. Placement fever is just about catching up. Lots of PPTs are on. Soon after coming to Bangalore, made a short trip to Managalore and visited Sis.. Had a couple of chill days in Mangalore.
The next series of posts in this blog are likely to be significantly affected by the upcoming placement season ..Crucial phase of life ... Lets see how things work out ..
Till the next post .. Cya ...Bye ...
