Due to the peculiar combination of courses that I have been fortunate enough to take, I happen to have a 3.5 day weekend that starts as early as Thursday Noon. After almost three weeks spent on various papers, the last weekend was pretty great.
Thursday:
Free trip to Houston. Not that I got to do much in Houston, but still, it was a welcome break.
Friday:
Watched Spiderman-II, the movie. And then went to AggieNights. AggieNights is kind of the weekend initiation party at Texas A&M. AggieNights features free pool, free bowling and FREE PIZZA. Now it is difficult to understand the value of free pizza. But believe me, for the American desi, there are few things in life as precious as his dose of FREE PIZZA. Free pizza is not just free pizza. Its something much more valuable than that.
It is the Desi's passport to a night without cooking. A date with palatable food. And its free. What more could one possibly ask for? Now, in a university of 43,000 around 60% of all people turning up for free pizza tend to be Indians. Obviously. It would be a social stigma for the average American Male to spend his weekend night without his girl, and when he's with his girl u can hardly expect him to bring the object of his desire to a free pizza party.
And what is even more special is the spirit if camaraderie that the Desis share. As you walk around the arena, every now and then u hear that familiar contemptuous Hindi tone saying
"Saare Desi log hi vela baite hain...Mufth mein khaana milti hai tho kahin se bhi baag aathe hain." And with these comments they proceed on in the queue to get their quota of the pizzas. As I stepped in to the queue I was observantly overhearing the conversations of all the others in the line. As soon as I got a feel for the job ahead... I went on had my doses of the food..... and in between the rich doses of the pizzas, said to my friends
"Saare Desi log hi vela baite hain...Mufth mein khaana milti hai tho kahin se bhi baag aathe hain." My friends circle gave an understanding nod. I was learning the tricks of the trade fast, indeed.
Saturday:
Went for my first American Football game. Texas A&M Vs Kansas State. At 30$ a ticket, for a 4 hour game, it was rather an expensive deal. But the 4 hours were solid fun. Imagine some 50,000 people all in maroon t-shirts, rooting for the home team. It was quite an experience. Expecially when the shouts, the moves and other assorted traditions of the whole crowd are coordinated and choreographed.
Now TAMU has the concept of Yell Leaders, who happen to be men, rather than the more familiar American counterpart of the Cheerleaders. But thankfully, Kansas had turned up with a rather "attractive" cheer team. That made sure any last regrets I had about the game were resolved. Now, the game itself should warrant another post...So lemme put an end to it here.
Sunday:
Sunday was bliss. Got up as early as 1:00 PM in the afternoon. And managed to finish two novels by around 3:30AM in the night and also managed to watch "Rush Hour 2" on the idiot box...The whole of the day, all that I effectively did was to lie on the bed, sit on the bed, sleep on the bed, watch TV from the bed, and read books on the bed. Now, some of my more intelligent readers would have got a grasp of what Im trying to say.
I didnt quite get of the bed the whole of the day.
Now, that is how a weekend should be. I had almost forgotten this in the past two years at IIM-B. Over the weekend, I also made a startling discovery, the number of visitors I have on my site is positively correlated to the frequency of my posting. Not a terribly bright inference, but I dont have a history of brightness. So that should be excused.
I was intending to change the blog template to celebrate the 2000th visior on my blog. But well, as it happens, I couldnt find a template that I liked more. So, as a consolatory celebration, I have added a new "Links Section" ... A few blogs that I usually frequent. All these blogs share a theme similar to mine ...
Thats it for now I guess ... Adieu!! Till my next post.
