IIM-A Confluence...

Life back to normal mode .. Things more down to earth to be discussed henceforth..
Won my first paper in exile. Got second place in IIM-A Confluence Finance Paper presentation contest. Jumpy presented the paper that we wrote on Bank Regulation in Emerging Economies. The idea was a prescriptive model for bank regulators in emerging economies. A bit disappointed as of now. Was hoping to make first place. But well, second prize is good enough I guess. Especially considering the fact that I got a prize without even attending the event.
There were some cribs about Confluence from friends in IIM-B and from non-IIMB friends as well. Supposedly IIM-A won the first prize in almost all the events. And the overall trophy as well. Not everyone was happy with way things went. But well, not having been there myself, it would be hard to comment on any of this. For the moment, let us discard these as rumors. But the fact remains that rumors do exist.
Got a class in 10 minutes .. So, gotta rush .. Bye!!

Random thoughts .. and thoughtless scribbling.

The US presidential debates are a bit similar to a scratchy tape recording. U know, those old tapes that we used before CDs came into our lives ... Now when u have a scratchy recording, it tends to get stuck in the middle, goes into a loop, and keeps repeating the same bit again and again.. Exactly..

Over the past few weeks I have had the privilege of watching three episodes of this great Tamaasha ... The first debate was intersting ... And then the tape went sour ... Now if there were to be a fourth debate, I guess I could almost predict with 83.57% as to what will be the exact words used by the two candidates.. So tiringly, boringly repetitive..

Now Im pretty much indifferent to either Kerry or Bush .. As mush indifferent as Im to Vajpayee or Manmohan Singh or Sonia Gandhi. A rather sceptic view of politics ... But this has been the result of 22 long years of observation, frustration and disappointment.. I have actually developed my own theory called the "Doctrine of Political Indifference" .. But explaining this doctrine is way beyond the reach of this forum.. But just to give a hint, the doctrine rests to some extent on the inevitable power of the bureaucracy ..

Well, what else? My first round of mid-terms got over ... And I have discovered that Im a consistent person. I hate exams. Consistently. Whether they are graded or non-graded. Multiple choice or essay type. US or India. Mathematical or fartological. Exams suck big time.

My cooking abilities are improving .. Now I can eat my own food without hesitation. What a big jump!! Have been reading a lot of books of late .. The TAMU library system lets you take as much as 99 books at a time .. WOW!! At one point, I was having 22 books. The last post was a result of my latest reading spree...

Nothing more to write as of now I guess... So, till the next post .. Bye!!

The ideal weekend...

Due to the peculiar combination of courses that I have been fortunate enough to take, I happen to have a 3.5 day weekend that starts as early as Thursday Noon. After almost three weeks spent on various papers, the last weekend was pretty great.

Thursday:
Free trip to Houston. Not that I got to do much in Houston, but still, it was a welcome break.

Friday:
Watched Spiderman-II, the movie. And then went to AggieNights. AggieNights is kind of the weekend initiation party at Texas A&M. AggieNights features free pool, free bowling and FREE PIZZA. Now it is difficult to understand the value of free pizza. But believe me, for the American desi, there are few things in life as precious as his dose of FREE PIZZA. Free pizza is not just free pizza. Its something much more valuable than that.

It is the Desi's passport to a night without cooking. A date with palatable food. And its free. What more could one possibly ask for? Now, in a university of 43,000 around 60% of all people turning up for free pizza tend to be Indians. Obviously. It would be a social stigma for the average American Male to spend his weekend night without his girl, and when he's with his girl u can hardly expect him to bring the object of his desire to a free pizza party.

And what is even more special is the spirit if camaraderie that the Desis share. As you walk around the arena, every now and then u hear that familiar contemptuous Hindi tone saying "Saare Desi log hi vela baite hain...Mufth mein khaana milti hai tho kahin se bhi baag aathe hain." And with these comments they proceed on in the queue to get their quota of the pizzas. As I stepped in to the queue I was observantly overhearing the conversations of all the others in the line. As soon as I got a feel for the job ahead... I went on had my doses of the food..... and in between the rich doses of the pizzas, said to my friends "Saare Desi log hi vela baite hain...Mufth mein khaana milti hai tho kahin se bhi baag aathe hain." My friends circle gave an understanding nod. I was learning the tricks of the trade fast, indeed.

Saturday:
Went for my first American Football game. Texas A&M Vs Kansas State. At 30$ a ticket, for a 4 hour game, it was rather an expensive deal. But the 4 hours were solid fun. Imagine some 50,000 people all in maroon t-shirts, rooting for the home team. It was quite an experience. Expecially when the shouts, the moves and other assorted traditions of the whole crowd are coordinated and choreographed.

Now TAMU has the concept of Yell Leaders, who happen to be men, rather than the more familiar American counterpart of the Cheerleaders. But thankfully, Kansas had turned up with a rather "attractive" cheer team. That made sure any last regrets I had about the game were resolved. Now, the game itself should warrant another post...So lemme put an end to it here.

Sunday:
Sunday was bliss. Got up as early as 1:00 PM in the afternoon. And managed to finish two novels by around 3:30AM in the night and also managed to watch "Rush Hour 2" on the idiot box...The whole of the day, all that I effectively did was to lie on the bed, sit on the bed, sleep on the bed, watch TV from the bed, and read books on the bed. Now, some of my more intelligent readers would have got a grasp of what Im trying to say. I didnt quite get of the bed the whole of the day.

Now, that is how a weekend should be. I had almost forgotten this in the past two years at IIM-B. Over the weekend, I also made a startling discovery, the number of visitors I have on my site is positively correlated to the frequency of my posting. Not a terribly bright inference, but I dont have a history of brightness. So that should be excused.

I was intending to change the blog template to celebrate the 2000th visior on my blog. But well, as it happens, I couldnt find a template that I liked more. So, as a consolatory celebration, I have added a new "Links Section" ... A few blogs that I usually frequent. All these blogs share a theme similar to mine ...

Thats it for now I guess ... Adieu!! Till my next post.
